Named after a fort just a few miles away that once served as the British military headquarters in colonial America, Frederica on St. Simons Island, Georgia, pays homage to the area’s history with a logo of English and Scottish flags side-by-side. It’s an unusual coupling given the two countries’ historical enmity, but when the Spanish tried to invade Georgia in 1742, a nearby settlement of Scots came to the aid of the Redcoats in St. Simons, helping to defeat the Spaniards in the “Battle of Bloody Marsh.” ...Read More

Home and Architectural Trends Magazine

An architecturally superior residence is about much more than the walls, windows and a roof. Between architect, interior designer and builder, something magical has to rise from the practical. The client for this project asked architect William Harrison, principal of Harrison Design Associates, and design team Steven Markey and Chad Goehring, to create a romantic house that would weave through the ancient oaks and inlets of its idyllic peninsular setting. An Arts and Crafts style was chosen as it sits lightly on the land and emphasizes natural materials that connect to the environment, says Harrison. ...Read More

Elegant Island Living

Elegant Island Living

Community. It’s one of the most frequently cited reasons
why people fall in love with St. Simons Island. The
majestic live oaks that canopy vast swaths of the island’s
18 square miles may be one of first things people
comment on, but it’s the island’s people and hospitality
that has the most profound effect. It’s not unusual to hear
that before choosing to live on St. Simons Island, people
had visited numerous places along the Eastern seaboard in
their search for a coastal place to live. St. Simons’ primary
financial driver is its resorts and their amenities, but in large
part, it’s the community lifestyle people find here that
prompts visitors to become residents. Read More...

Executive Golfer Magazine

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GEORGIA: After a scenic drive
over the tidal marshes of coastal Georgia and through the
oyster-shell covered entranceway at Frederica Golf Club,
what struck me most was the prominent American flag
positioned between the clubhouse, practice facility, and
first tee. During my day with Wayne and Marti Huizenga,
the first question I posed to them was, “Why is the
American flag placed in the center of the club facilities?”
Their response was quick and direct. “We are proud to
be Americans. As trite as it may sound, our flag has been
through a lot for us to have the freedoms we enjoy. We are
lucky to call America home.” ...Read More
